gleaves > Mary Jane and her mother represent women with memories of Pioneer parents, crossing the Cumberland Gap, with axe and ox cart, making trails and clearing land until interupted by Andrew Jackson to fight in New Orleans. The peace was soon over with occupying soldiers, raiding smoke houses, pantries, and barns. The visions of agrarian homeland was gone, replaced by dead and wounded. There never was help or a type of a marshall plan. Women shouldered responsibility in years of reconstruction resulting in matriarchs that reigned in unpainted houses.
gleaves > A man of deep honesty, a gentleman with quick dry humor and universally liked, without ever a bad word. His mother placed him and others against a cellar wall that shook as big guns atop Ropers Knob roared. One mile from here stands a brick church, a school room above. Slates were used for writing, excellence in reading and spelling using a Bible and Almanac as text, forging character.
gleaves > Facing the rising sun and a mile away stands a great Indian mound of Smithsonian study built by wise Indians in a beautiful valley. Time of great depression and a few years before doctors had the treatment for rh blood problems. Heaven is her home.
